Session 25: Orthopedic Pathology

Orthopedic pathology, also known as bone pathology, is a subfield of surgical pathology that deals with the diagnosis and characterization of many bone diseases and specifically studies the causes and effects of musculoskeletal disorders. In addition to gross and microscopic findings, findings from in vivo radiological examinations and sometimes radiographs are used to diagnose bone disorders.

Orthopedic disorders may be congenital, and there may be genetic and environmental factors that affect the normal functioning of bones, joints, or muscles. Other causes of bone disease include severe impact/injury and weak bone/bone atrophy.

Many patients diagnosed with bone disease have no risk factors. However, there are risks such as chronic diseases, illness, radiation exposure, and genetic factors. Although the direct cause of bone tumour formation has not yet been identified, possible causes include bone injury, radiation therapy, and genetics.

The impact of bone disease varies by disease. Its effects are physical, mental and economic and affect an individual's quality of life. Orthopedic conditions can have a significant impact on a person's functional abilities. People with bone disease may experience complications such as extreme pain, fractures, loss of size, and mobility. It may also make it easier to wake up. Many of these bone diseases can lead to poor mental and physical health. In addition to physical effects, bone disease can also have psychological effects, adversely affecting a person's way of thinking, body image, and self-esteem, leading to feelings of helplessness and fear of falling.

Pathogens and their mechanisms are very different from those found in animals, but plants are characterized by fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, viroids, virus-like organisms, phytoplasmas, protozoa, nematodes, and parasitic plants. Damage caused by insects, mites, vertebrates, and other small herbivores is not considered part of the field of plant pathology. This field is relevant to the epidemiology of plant diseases, and in particular to horticulture of species of great importance for human nutrition and other human utility.
